Job Description
Job Title: Director of Quaker Affairs
Region/Unit: Advancement
Supervisor: Associate General Secretary for Advancement
Location: Philadelphia, PA
Summary of Responsibilities: An essential position at AFSC to build enhanced
initiatives to connect with and engage Quakers to join in and support AFSC�s
work. Work with directors and program staff across AFSC�s regions and units
and in close collaboration with the General Secretary�s Office, in
particular the Assistant General Secretary of Quaker Affairs.
Responsibilities:
1.. Cultivate contacts and ongoing relationships with Quakers. Interpret the
peace and justice work of AFSC in articulate, compelling and creative ways,
with a special emphasis on building support for international development.
2.. Represent the AFSC to Quaker communities and develop opportunities to
participate with the AFSC. Develop an annual plan and schedule and implement
activities which could range from hands on service projects to education and
advocacy.
3.. Design and market programs for Quakers and other constituencies of
different ages and in various locations such as schools, Monthly and Yearly
Meetings and in remote sites.
4.. Create partnerships with Quaker communities on international and
domestic programs. Liaison between the International Program unit and Quaker
Meetings, as the need for humanitarian assistance kits arises.
5.. Create a volunteer program for Quakers, with particular emphasis on
young Quakers. Search out and promote opportunities for internships or
fellowships.
6.. Advance the Yearly Meeting Visiting program and expand visitation to
include specific Monthly Meetings.
7.. Work with External Affairs and Educational Outreach to develop and
disseminate educational materials for AFSC�s program priorities.
8.. Keep informed of and articulate AFSC�s programs through contacts with
staff, attending events, reading materials and visits to field programs.
9.. Develop budget to support the goals of Quaker Affairs. Track
expenditures and meet financial targets. In co-ordination with Development
and External Affairs, identify opportunities for synergy.
10.. Supervise staff and volunteers associated with the program.
11.. Identify approach for program evaluation, measuring the impact of the
Quaker Affairs office.
12.. Develop systems and utilize technology to support Quaker Affairs
initiatives.
Qualifications:
1.. Five years or more experience in education, communication and marketing,
with a track record of success in representing and interpreting
organizations and their programs and goals to a wide range of persons of
different backgrounds.
2.. Member of a Monthly Meeting of the Religious Society of Friends and
understand the wide spectrum of Friends.
3.. Bachelor�s degree or equivalent or relevant work experience is required.
4.. Excellent interpersonal skills, with the capacity to engage and
collaborate with people across organizational units. Ability to work
cooperatively with committees and staff, and in an organization that is
characterized by a high level of consultation. Ease in initiating contact
with persons not known.
5.. Ability to communicate professionally and persuasively both orally and
in writing, with the facility to distill and synthesize program content for
external constituents. Convey credibility and expertise.
6.. Demonstrated experience managing and guiding both staff and volunteers.
Must be highly organized and have extensive experience planning and
implementing programs and budgets.
7.. Ability to work both independently and in a multi-layered team
environment, establish objectives, determine priorities, set performance
standards and establish a successful team approach to achieve goals.
8.. Initiative, good judgment, perseverance and ability to manage ambiguity.
Ability to use imagination and innovation within financial, physical, time
or other constraints.
9.. Computer literacy required; familiarity with Raiser�s Edge, Microsoft
Office and the Internet desirable
10.. Willingness and ability to travel approximately 50% each month over a
wide geographical area and to work some evenings and weekends.
11.. Commitment to Quaker values and testimonies. Understanding of and
compatibility with the principles and philosophy of the American Friends
Service Committee including nonviolence and the belief in the intrinsic
worth of every individual.
12.. Understanding of and commitment to the principles, concerns, and
considerations of AFSC in regard to issues of race, class, nationality,
religion, age, gender and sexual orientation, and disabilities. Demonstrated
ability to work and communicate with diverse staff.
Compensation: Range - 18 (Exempt) - Comprehensive medical and
hospitalization plan; Term-life, accident and salary continuation
insurances, defined benefit pension plan, plus fringe benefits;
participation in unemployment and worker's compensation and social security.
