*Subject:* Bringing 8 young people to the Nobel Peace Summit
Friends,
We have been invited to send 8 young people (ages 18-23) to participate in
this year's Nobel Peace Summit in Rome, December 13-15. The meeting's theme
this year is "The Next Generation of Peacemakers". There will be sessions
with the Nobel laureates and interactive sessions with students in Colleges
and Universities in Rome. It is my understanding that this year's Summit
will include the Dalai Lama, Mohammed Younis (Grameen Bank), President
Gorbachev, Betty Williams, Mairead Maguire and Shirin Ebadi and others. The
Organizations who received the Nobel will also be represented.
Paul is gathering a small committee of folks to review the materials from
the applicants. We are hoping that at least 3 will be Quaker. We
definitely want to make sure our delegation is balanced with all categories
of preference. We are fortunate to have resources from a donor to pay all
the expenses for the 8 young people attending (except shopping or other
incidentals).
Ruth Seeley will be coordinating the logistics for making this happen.
Because it is so late, we will not require an application. It seems wise to
ask each young person who would like to apply to attend to write a letter
(no more than 2 pages) about their own personal work for peace and what they
might get out of being part of such a delegation. You might want to think
about endorsing a young person's request.
Ruth will get back in touch with you about deadlines and timing for all of
this, and the names of the committee working with Paul. In the meantime,
please think of some terrific young people you have come in contact in your
work with so that you can forward them the information about the invitation
to applywhen it is ready.
It's nice to have a happy thing to report.
Mary Ellen
